Building rods, components, and everything in between

Shop Notes

I use planing forms to create strips. My planes have an offset grooved that works like a jointer in woodworking while pressing the strip firmly into the groove. A brass sliding weight on the form allows me to create very accurate strips for rods. I’ve developed machinery for rough planing and hollowing to speed the process. Hand planing is still what I enjoy the most.

Components

All my components for rods are developed in house. Tubing is drawn and developed into ferrules. Guides, both tournament and snake are twisted and plated. Agate and Mildrum stippers are hand formed and soldered along with tip tops. Reel seats are drawn and machined. Rod Tubes are created here.

New Elements

I have added cnc milling and 3d printing to work along with a manual mill and lathe. This new technology enhances my development of components, machining and engraving . I’ve also added materials like light weight carbon fiber laminated ferruled splice joints for two -handed rods. These newer technologies are an interesting addition.
